ANNOUNCEMENT
This exhibition, by photographer Alex Schneideman, is a series of large black and white prints of Taroudant taken in 2011. It is the culmination of many visits to the ancient Berber city of Taroudant which lies in the Souss Valley, south of the Atlas mountains in Morocco.
The exhibition runs from 6th to 23rd October 2011

Here are some layouts from today's Spectrum section in the Sunday Times magazine. I helped the photographer, Jocelyn Bain Hogg with the scanning and post production of his amazing project and prepared all the images for print. Jocelyn has spent four years reprising an earlier book on London's gangsters. He shoots on film so the technical demands on every part of the process are much greater then if he used digital. By using film for documentary work I believe the photographer must make a greater commitment to his subject and rely much more on instinct to get the work done. The book comes out later this year. These are some new photographs I took of the Libyan Embassy demonstration at the outset of the campaign to oust Gadaffi.
During the demonstration there was a feeling of it being only a matter of hours before the 'Colonel in Chief' would be following Mubarak into gilded exile but revolutions are not matters of science fact and here we are, a few weeks later, and western jets are bombing tripoli.
Viva the will of the Libyan people!

Look at these serious looking oldsters just hanging out in Golborne Road... They're always there on a Friday - they love the bric-a-brac market and are always on the hunt for a bargain.

The question that my print clients ask more than any other is about what constitutes an edition. More specifically the question is, "If I change the size is that another edition?" I admit that I haven't a clue. Traditionally the question would probably not have arisen due to the practical limits on print processes.
There is a growing need to answer this question if only because so many people; artists and collectors alike, are asking it. Below is a 'grab' from the website of a prominent New York photography gallery and it appears to give the impression that there is a growing consensus on the edition versus print size debate.

Peter Rauter was my photographic mentor and great friend. He died in 2004 leaving a set of portraits of some of the leading thinkers, artists and business people each of whom arrived in the UK because they were fleeing fascism.
They all made their homes here and contributed widely to the cultural, political and business scene of post-war Britain. Peter Rauter's own family are from this emigrant stock, indeed his father, a musician, is featured in the collection of photographs.
I helped Peter on some of these shoots and printed some of the original prints. In the beginning Peter used the "lith' method of printing which produced wonderfully erratic, warm, tonal prints. The next set, which are now in the collection of the Jewish Museum in London, were made in the traditional silver-gelatin method. Now it falls to me to make some new prints. I am doing this by scanning the original negs and printing them as inkjets. In order to reflect the highly 'human' nature' of the portraits I am printing them as 'Black Only' pigment ink prints. This method allows more light to 'slop around' in the print and restores some 'warmth' to digital printing.

Far from being the 'Switzerland of Asia' Singapore is becoming for (for me) increasingly interesting with every visit. Most of these images were taken on the day I got there There are plenty more images to follow but I thought I'd post these in the meantime.

I've just finished printing the photographs and artworks for Richie Culver's debut show.
RIchie is a very exciting young artist from the Frozen North (of England) who has made his home in London. Much of his work derives from old family snap shots; the sort we all have. Richie takes these photographs and reworks them to produce new meanings. Sometimes he adds slogans cut from newspapers and sometimes he cuts the prints to produce new meanings. Some of them are truly disturbing and some are touching. I have never seen this done before.
Richie's own photography is shot using very low-res cameras which produce tiny files. Normally I expect to receive 60mg files minimum when asked to make 70cm by 100cm prints but not in Richie's case. The files could be as small as 2meg or adequately sized but whichever way his artwork comes in it always produces an arresting image. The breakdown of the image quality can work in the print's favour and with a little bit of tightening up of the levels on my part the original light values of the image can be rendered onto paper producing original, emotional and psychologically intriguing artworks.
I should add that without Cecily Mullins (Richie's fiancee) I would never be writing this piece because it is Cecily who has pulled the whole show together; organising the printing and everything else that is needed to put on the exhibition.
The show isn't on for long so please try and catch it if you can. You can see more of Richie's work at www.richieculver.com

A new set of photographs which I shot in Taroudant is now on show at the gallery. The images are a response to the relationship between the ancient city of Taroudant and the harsh sun that scours its roof tops and pavements every day.
All the images are available for purchase in limited editions. I have also created a print-on-demand book which is available to order.

Hi All, just to let you know that in the coming weeks I will be updating my price list and adding some new scanning services.
Unfortunately I will have to add a modest amount to my print prices but nothing like the enormous amount by which my costs have gone up.
Please take advantage of the 2010 prices before I make the new ones official.
All the best,
Alex
